Fritz Hansen gets wood

Ever since its launch in 2005, the Little Friend table has found itself a home with design conscious customers around the world, as the perfect partner for anything from a laptop to a café latte.
Fritz Hansen have now introduced the table top in veneer – in addition to the variety of laminate colours. Now available in either oak or walnut veneer, customers can place this portable table from room to room and from home to office, as a minimalistic solution to modern living and working.

Also re-introduced in it’s original wooden leg design is the Grand Prix chair. Designed by Arne Jacobsen and originally known as the Model 3130, the chair was renamed after it won the Grand Prix at the XI. Triennale di Milano in 1957. The Grand Prix was produced with wooden legs however, these were later replaced by the metal undercarriage used on the 3107s.
Thanks to new production methods the Grand Prix Chair is now available in the original design in 9 colours and 2 veneer finishes. Despite the affordable price, the chair remains exclusive and will blend elegantly into a wide variety of settings as a great example of furniture design that is able to influence and elevate an entire room by its mere presence and beauty.

Hella Jongerius expands the Vitra Colour Library

‘The story of Hopsak is about creating something new not only by interweaving two different colours, but also by linking design history with today’s sensibility and by uniting the industrial world of the office with the softness of the home.’ (Hella Jongerius)
Aluminium-Chair-Group_Hopsak02
Hopsak fabric has been exclusively manufactured for Vitra since 1971. The expressive flat-weave material made of durable polyamide was originally offered in a palette developed by Alexander Girard for the Eames and Nelson collections. Over the years, Hopsak has been regularly updated and refined to meet changing technical requirements and colour preferences and is the reigning classic in the current portfolio of Vitra fabrics.
In collaboration with Hella Jongerius, Vitra has now completely revised the palette of Hopsak shades and expanded the selection to a total of 28 colours. The new palette of colours adds an inviting touch to the Eames Aluminium Group and other Vitra classics and opens up the fabric to new uses and contemporary designs.

Enjoy the Silence

Last month we featured an article on noise in the workplace and the demand this creates for acoustic products. One such product that rises to this challenge is the new Aircone from Swedish manufacturer Abstracta.

ABSTRACTA_120117_0514_web

Aircone is a sound-absorbent partition with a simple & bold graphic design. The modules are assembled together using small plastic clips, and each module is angled and has a tapered shape. The pattern formed by combining several modules can be varied in a virtually infinite number of ways. The angles diffuse sound waves, and the product thus helps create a better sound environment. Aircone is made from compression-moulded fabric-covered fibre felt and is available in a range of colours. It can be hung from the ceiling or against the wall on an aluminium rail.

It’s noisy! Shelter from the storm in the workplace

The challenge of providing the optimum level of acoustic performance in an office is one of those issues that everybody accepts is very important. Yet it has proved to be one of those intractable issues that suffers both from some important misperceptions and which also has to be balanced against other challenges when it comes to designing offices, not least the most significant trend of the past twenty or thirty years, namely the shift to open plan working. At the same time we have seen a shrinking of workstation footprints and the greater use of mobile phones and other technology. All of these changes have focused attention on workplace acoustics – currently one of the most talked about issues in the workplace, and visual privacy – one of the least talked about.

Nestle PTC – Success at the BCO Awards

Nestleweb01

Following earlier success at the British Council of Offices regional awards, the Nestle PTC at York has now been acknowledged at the national BCO awards as winner in the Projects up to 2000 sq.m category.

nestleweb04

The BCO says that “this building gives the company much more than a workplace – it incorporates offices; sensory areas (tasting panels); engineering support; conceptualisation; design/idea space; a prototyping kitchen; customer experience and demonstration spaces and meeting space: Willy Wonka would be jealous.

The building offers a unique visitor experience – the glazed front door provides an insight into the world of confectionary – along with an innovative and inspirational working environment. The design facilitates flexible and efficient working and enhances interaction between the diverse range of departments which share the workspace.”

Refreshing Randers+Radius – Get A Grip, Get Dry

We’ve long been fans of Danish company Randers’ products (our ONO boardroom table being an example), so we thought it was about time to re-focus on some of their more recent releases since their 2011 merger with fellow Danes Radius Mobler.

The stunning and innovative GRIP table is inspired by tightrope walkers and becomes more stable as weight increases. At the centre of the table structure there is a strong floating beam which can create a long freestanding table. The hinged cast aluminium legs simply clamp onto the beam at any point and gravity does the rest.

The equally innovative DRY chair is a study in minimalism with a visually very thin “folded” plane shell. But it’s comfortable too: The shell is molded in PUR rubber with in-molded steel structure. When empty it is straight and flat, but when occupied it adapts to the shape of human body. Thanks to the elasticity of PUR and an intelligent in-molded spring construction the shell provides seating comfort by taking the body’s shape and by supporting it where needed.
The clever linking device allows conference and auditorium layouts to be quickly built up and disassembled and DRY stacks easily and noiselessly up to 15 chairs on the floor. The all over PUR seat ensures that chairs are not scratched while stacking and don’t slide.

Zaha Hadid – from Vitra to the Olympic Stadium

The announcement has been made and Tokyo is the winner of the bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and with it the confirmation that Zaha Hadid Architects will create the brand new national stadium of Japan that will act as a venue for sporting events, as well as the opening ceremonies and closure.

2013 also marks the 20th anniversary of Zaha Hadid’s first public building commission – the Vitra Fire Station on the Vitra Campus at Weil am Rhein. The Fire Station consists of spaces for fire engines, showers and changing rooms for the firemen as well as a conference room and a kitchenette. Although Vitra decided to disband its fire brigade a few years later, the building is still used for events and exhibitions held by the Vitra Design Museum.
The sculpture-like building was cast in concrete on site. Positioned alongside the angular features of the neighbouring production facilities, it has the effect of a frozen explosion. Its lack of colour and right angles provides visitors with an unusual spatial experience.
